Description
Kashkooli
The Fars region in central Iran is a vast region that is home to many nomadic peoples. Lined with mountains and fertile valleys, the nomadic Ghashghayi tribes live here. They have shaped the weaving tradition in this area and still live in their original environment. In Shiraz, the trading centre of this rich region, these Persian nomadic carpets are traded. Shiraz carpets are produced by sedentary nomads in countless villages.
Characteristic of these carpets is the diamond-shaped medallion embedded in a geometric dark red patterned basic design. Ghashghayi carpets, on the other hand, are varied in pattern and colour. The nomads are inspired by their environment and translate their impressions into their weaving art. Both Ghashghayi and Shiraz carpets are produced exclusively on wool warp. Very fine carpets from this region are produced by the Kashkooli clan. These are rare and accordingly very sought after. The Gabbeh carpet also originated here. More about this under Gabbeh/Loribaft.
